Aviation columnist, pilot, and stalwart Calgarian, Gertrude de la Vergne Tanner was a Canadian adventurer. In 1928 she became the first female pilot in Alberta (and the third in Canada!) and went on to perform stunts in the air to adoring crowds, such as popping balloons with her propeller. She later became the weekly aviation columnist for the Calgary Herald, and retained her love of the Calgary skies for the rest of her life.
